While there are rumors that the popularization of country music has lead to a drop in its popularity, the opposite is occurring as people are going to alternative sites in the internet to find the real country music or as it is also called Americana Music.

It is a phenomenon that will continue while Hollywood, Nashville, and New York continue their course in stagnation, personality cult, and mediocrity.

The radio stations that have the real country and rock music exist in Texas and are numerous. The internet is full of stations and websites such as Radio Free Texas, My Texas Music.com, and Dewberry Jam Radio. The above mentioned sites are more popular than the mainstream country music from Nashville.

The people whose records are played in these stations are those who have real talent but are never appreciated by a conglomerate that churns out fast food music which leaves people wanting the real thing.

The unsung heroes of the real country music are also people who down to earth and write [as well as sing] about the reality of life in the USA. It is a reality of life that is different from the fantasy world of Hollywood and Nashville.

The examples are numerous.

Jessica Shepherd is one of the artists whose music has reached the people of Australia. Her latest album “You’re Country Now” has a song dedicated to God and challenges people to do their work instead of pretending to work at work.

Jessica Shepherd has even written music for a movie which is being released in different parts of the country.  She still finds time to have a Gospel Concert with other musicians in her town of Austin Texas.

Katherine Dawn is another example of Country and Americana Music. She has been singing true country and Americana Music since the 1970’s. Katherine Dawn has combined the style of rock and country music of the 1970’s to form a sound that is unbeatable.

One of her songs was heard in Venezuela in the 1970’s at a house of one of my fellow classmates from high school. I remember the song was called “Carrousel” and it was beautiful. Katherine Dawn has even formed the Texas Lady Bugs with other singers from Texas.

The latest album from this newly formed group called “First Rodeo” received hits as people went to buy it. The reason is her natural way [as well as the rest of the Lady Bugs] in interpreting true country music.

Brenda Kay is another singer who has recorded the album “Dirt’s Still Red”. Her song “How You Get To Me” has received numerous plays in stations around the country.

Christen Sawyer with her hit song “Crazy” captured the market around the world as well. She was even interviewed in ESPN Radio for a sports event.

The people have also been stomping and dancing to Chip Murrey and Texas Underground. Chip Murrey and Texas Underground are a very popular group with their fusion of Southern Rock and Country in the style of Lynard Skynard without copying.

The latest CD from Chip Murrey and Texas Underground called “Pay Dirt” is an example of what music from the USA should sound like. The concerts I have been told are examples of the musical contact that exists between the artists and the public.

John Arthur Martinez and Mark Allan Atwood are artists whose music are examples of why country music has not decreased in popularity. Both artists have contributed to recovering the body and soul of country music.

The music of these two great artists have even been heard in Europe much more than the Nashville and Hollywood sounds. What can be said about country music declining as a result of its increasing popularity is false. It just simply woke up people who wanted true country music.

The world of Texas Music is filled with songs that deal with failed relationships such as breakups, divorce, death, and the suffering related to the negative aspects of life. The negative aspects of life are evident in all genres of music in the same sphere as the positive aspects. The reason is the human psyche.

Jessica Shepherd wrote and recorded many songs dealing with heartbreak in her album “Travelin Girl”. The song “Broken Promises” [which was written by Cheri Arnett, Jessica Shepherd, and David Valley] deals with selfishness and the temptation of a person to hurt the one they love with the intention of breaking up. It talks about the inner struggle inside the human mind to dismiss such thoughts.

The song ‘Fool” which was written by Kate Mc Carthy and performed by Jessica Shepherd in the same album dealt with a woman being used by a man before being discarded like a broken toy. It is such a sad song performed with raw emotion by Ms. Shepherd and captures the heart of what is a true break up of a romance or a marriage.

The people who hear the song can only imagine what can happen especially when the hurt can occur both ways such as a woman doing the same thing to a man. The song “Never Seems To Be Enough” [written by Jessica Shepherd and Daniel M. Smith] deals with a person who is not content with their significant other but loves the other person and is suffering because the “grass is always greener on the other side”.

Jessica Shepherd sang that “Never Seems To Be Enough” seems to be a condition inherent in the human beings since the majority is never satisfied with their lives. The song also deals with how such a mentality in a person could lead to a break up since the person wants to change his or her significant other into a replica of the other pair.

Chip Murrey and Texas Underground recorded their version of “You’re Gonna Miss Me” which is superior to the version recorded by the late recording artists Bobby Darin. The song deals with the breakup of a couple with a twist.

It means that the person who is doing the break up may feel good in the beginning but that it will be short lived. The rest of the song deals with how the person will miss his or her pair when they feel the pain of all of the good things that happened during the romance. The songs about break up and country music are abundant but these are the big examples from the Lone Star State called Texas.

The Lone Star State of Texas is emerging as a musical powerhouse in response to the mediocrity of North American Music from Hollywood and New York. It is not the first time that Texas had a musical revolution. In the 1970′s, a group of Texas Musicians such as Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson thought that Nashville had gone “soft”. They formed “The Outlaws” in response to what they perceived as problems in Nashville.

It appears that the musical history of Texas and the United States of America repeats itself as the world is exposed to mediocrity in mainstream music. The musical revolution comes in the form of radio stations such as Radio Free Texas as well as artists such as Jessica Shepherd, Brenda Kay, Vanessa Peters and Ice Cream On Monday.

Chip Murrey and Texas Underground with their inspiration from Lynard Skynard [a Southern Rock Group] has also been part of this new musical revolution. The Texas Music Awards are organized each year for different categories. They are going to hold their annual awards with B.J. Thomas [of Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head fame] as the host.

I have written about Jessica Shepherd and have decided that Brenda Kay, Vanessa Peters and Ice Cream On Mondays deserve recognition. Chip Murrey and Texas Underground will also be mentioned as well.

I. Brenda Kay: Queen of Texas and Americana Music

Brenda Kay is a Texas and Americana Country and Rock Artist who has lived between Texas and North Dakota. She has been nominated for the 2010 Texas Music Awards for Best Female Vocalist for her latest release “Dirt’s Still Red”.

She is a natural born singer and songwriter whose music deals with everyday life. I hear her music and it brings memories of my times in places such as North Carolina and South Carolina. I am also reminded of my experiences negative and positive.

Brenda Kay is also a humanitarian who participated in an annual event in her hometown of Abilene, Texas called “Trash Off”. The purpose of this event is for local artists to participate in cleaning Abilene to make it clean and green.

I have decided that she deserves to be called Queen of Texas and Americana Music for her way of interpreting the genre in a down to earth fashion. She will be an inspiration to future Texas and Americana Musicians and singers in the decades and centuries to come.

II. Vanessa Peters and Ice Cream On Monday: Folk Music from Texas to the World

Vanessa Peters and Ice Cream On Monday are the successors of greats such as Bob Dylan as well as Peter, Paul, and Mary. While Vanessa Peters was born in Texas, she has travelled around the world including Europe.

She has been nominated for the 2010 Texas Music Awards in the category of Best Female Vocalist and Vocal Duo/Group of the Year for her album “Sweetheart: Keep Your Chin Up”. She is an example of how singer/songwriters remain alive and singing about the realities of life.

After hearing Vanessa Peters, I have concluded that the world needs more singer/songwriters to give the people [including those in the Western World] a dose of reality that is lacking in the mainstream media.

Vanessa Paters and Ice Cream On Monday have placed Texas on the international map with regards to Texas Folk Music. I can only imagine how a concert with Bob Dylan accompanied by Vanessa Peters and Ice Cream On Mondays must be.

III. Chip Murrey and Texas Underground: Music With Electricity

I have yet to visit the Lone Star State of Texas in order to meet the artists who I admire. The day I go to Texas, I would like to see the concerts of Chip Murrey and Texas Underground [as well as other Texas Artists].

Chip Murrey and Texas Underground have been nominated for the 2010 Texas Music Awards for Rising Star. I voted for them since their music is out of this world and inspired by Lynard Skynard.

They have written and interpreted songs that deal with pride in God as well as country at a time when the society that dominates the USA denigrates both. The concerts of Chip Murrey and Texas Underground are active and down to earth with music to make people feel better as well as dance and sing.

The version of “You Gonna Miss Me Early In The Morning” interpreted by Chip Murrey and Texas Underground had an electrical power that supersedes the version by Bobby Darin that I heard while in North Carolina.

Chip Murrey and Texas Underground have released their latest album “Paydirt” which has been selling very well in the Texas and International Market. It is hoped that they can continue bringing real music to a world that is starving for it.
