Leyenda Entre Leyendas: Nil Lara

“I Will Be Free” [Seré Libre] es un himno contemporáneo hacia la libertad.

EYEWITNESS REPORT FOR THE VOICE OF RUSSIA:

Nil Lara

Author: Roberto Carlos Alvarez-G

I had the experience of going to a cultural fair which is held in Coral Gables Florida every first Friday of the Month. The date was on the 3rd of November 2007 on that Friday night. When I arrived at the festival, there was an open concert with a singer whose presence and songs were familiar.

The singer even invited people to enjoy and participate in the music. While listening, I remember hearing the music while working in Key Largo, Florida where such music is popular.

After the concert, I had the honour, pleasure, and opportunity to talk with the singer and his band which was the equivalent of being in heaven while on earth. It was after the conversation that they gained a convert and someone who likes his music.

I bought his CD and a Silver Ring from his band [who had a kiosk at the side of the concert]. I also had the opportunity to obtain his autograph on my CD and he received my business card as a souvenir of the reunion. I am a believer that his music is a beginning of a renaissance for great music.

The name of the singer is Nil Lara and he writes all of his songs. The result is a refreshing alternative to the fast food music churned out by the musical conglomerates. Nil Lara is one of the few US Latins born in the USA who has been able to combine the Old Cuban Trova Style Music with some of the Folk Rock Like Music that existed in an era when singer songwriters wrote from the heart.

He has plowed the paths for future singers with album releases such as “Smile”, “My First Child”, “The Monkey”, “Nil Lara”, “Testimony”, and “DA” and tours throughout North America, Europe, as well as singing with greats such as Lenny Kravitz, Blues Travelers, Barenaked Ladies, and Natalie Marchant.

The CD that was purchased from him was titled simply “Nil Lara” and it has not deceived the underwriter. The various songs from this CD are simply too great in its interpretation.

“Vida Mas Simple” which was interpreted with the vocals of Nil Lara while playing his guitar evokes a desire of a return to a simpler life. It is this simpler lifestyle that is almost disappearing in the throngs of sordid ideologies and beliefs which torture the mind. “Vida Mas Simple” was an inspiration to go and find an alternative lifestyle that evokes relaxation and tranquility.

“Vida Mas Simple” is a mixture of Cuban Trova, Bolero, and Folk Rock Music of the soft kind. In my opinion, this is one of Nil Lara’s greatest Songs for all eternity. “Vida Mas Simple” was one song that took over my soul.

“Baro” is one of the songs composed and interpreted by Nil Lara that draws from the Cuban Trova and Afro Cuban Beats which makes the song worth listening. The words to the song are also great.

His music has even appeared in soundtracks for movies. One example has been “Fighting For My Love” in the Scrubbs Soundtrack. “Fighting For My Love” was another song that evokes the realities of today’s society. It had me reminding of my days of looking for a true love until I found it with my current wife Marlene.

“My First Child” reminds me of my daughter and I have played this song for her. She likes it since she is my first [and only child]. The songs called “Baby”, “Bleeding”, “Crawl”, and “Mama’s Chant” were also excellent.

“Baby” was about the need for a pair to loosen their pride and to fall in love. It was one of the songs that I heard in the festival. “Bleeding” was another sad song with upbeat melodies that reminds people to maintain a sense of tranquility.

“Crawl” and “Mama’s Chant” was a great example of how Cuban Music is mixed with Rock Music.

He has recorded songs such “Sinking In Your Senses” and “Never Listen” which deals with couples that do not want to listen to each other and then appreciate too late. Both songs while sad have an upbeat like most rock music that is of a pure nature.

Anyone who wants to see and hear a true singer songwriter for today’s era should see Nil Lara. Nil Lara will be an artist that people talk about in the future when all other stars have long disappeared from the limelight. Why? Because Nil Lara and His Music are the real thing with no artificial colours.

Nil Lara’s song tells a truth that few people dare to express on the outside. “Money Makes the Monkey Dance” evokes a reality that exists in today’s world with our politicians and businessmen doing deals just to get the money regardless of whether the deal was a legitimate one or not. It is a song that exposes our leaders [or at least most of them] for what they have become, a group of faceless hypocrites who say anything to get elected only to break their promises. This also includes those who say anything to get into power only to destroy democracy and freedom and replace it with a puritanical dictatorship that controls all forms of thoughts and expressions.

It is this song that inspired me to think and do all that is possible for a better world.

“I Will Be Free” evokes the desire of people to be free to decide for themselves what they want in life without the interference of outside forces. It is an anthem for Universal Freedom that only an artist could express. “Baro” and “Vida Mas Simple” were other songs that evoke the greatness of Nil Lara.

“Baro” is one of the songs composed and interpreted by Nil Lara that draws from the Cuban Trova and Afro Cuban Beats which makes the song worth listening. The words to the song are also great.

It is through the simpler things that one can attain personal liberty. “Vida Mas Simple” was a mixture of Cuban Trova, Bolero, and Folk Rock Music of the soft kind. Nil Lara was born in New Jersey to Cuban Parents and lived between the USA and Venezuela. During his life, he managed to absorb the cultures of Cuba, Venezuela, and the USA to create a truly new American Music which defies classification. Unfortunately our world does not allow such independence. Regardless, he has plowed the paths for future singers with album releases such as “Smile”, “My First Child”, “The Monkey”, “Nil Lara”, “Testimony”, and “DA” and tours throughout North America, Europe, as well as singing with greats such as Lenny Kravitz, Blues Travelers, and Natalie Marchant.

Before discussing contemporary Cuban and Floridian history, it must be remembered that Cuba and Florida has enjoyed a special relationship since the Spanish under Ponce de Leon left Cuba and colonized Florida. Ponce De Leon founded the first city in North America called St Augustine one hundred years before the English founded Jamestown.

For those who say that the British were in North America in 1587 before Jamestown, the Spanish were able to establish a presence in North America and in Florida before the British came. The classical history of Florida and Cuba were intertwined with refugees from both sides. When Cuba exploded, many people went to Florida. When Florida had problems especially when the United States of America invaded Florida, many people left for Cuba.

During the struggle for Cuban Independence from Spain, Jose Marti used to stop in Tampa and Key West for the cause against the colonial masters of Spain in Cuba. Even US President Grant visited Cuba before his death in 1885.

Miami was a tourist destination for Cubans during the era of the Republic and the now defunct airline Pan Am used to fly people from Cuba to Miami and vice versa. People even went on cruise boats from La Habana to Key West or Miami and vice versa. The same applied to Tampa.

The present history of Cuba and Miami started in 1959 when Castro took over in Cuba. While many people can attest to his popular support, there were people who saw through him. There was also documentation which shows Russia [USSR] and the USA were involved in planning the events in Cuba. Russia wanted a colony, Castro wanted power, and the United States of America wanted cheap professional labour to replace the African Americans who wanted to be free to determine their own destiny.

Everybody got what they wanted and Castro was able to establish a Communist Regime in the heart of the Americas. The people of Cuba who could not stand Castro or wanted to wait for him to fall went to Miami Florida. While waiting for next year in Cuba, they worked in menial jobs such as being waiters, bakers, dishwashers, and eveb janitors while they tried to study their careers again.

The 1960′s were difficult but the Cubans moved on and started to become part of the American Dream as they started working in their professions after passing their examinations. Others went into business after raising money. The march towards prosperity was ongoing. The 1970′s were the times of a big presence of Cubans. People started to visit Miami Florida and the city started to grow. It was the age of Disco and it appeared that the party would not cease.

The year 1980 was a pivotal year with the Mariel Boatlift and the arrival of more refugees. Mariel was caused by the same dictator Castro who saw increasing discontent while Carter saw more labour. Castro sent refugees with people from prisons while Carter opened the doors. It appeared that Miami was destroyed for good.

Many people wandered if Miami would regain its luster. In Miami Florida, the programme Miami Vice and one of the guest star actress in the show from Cuba called Marilyn Romero proved that this was not to be the case. Miami Florida continued to grow until it has become the international city that it is today.

In the entertainment field, Miami has Cuban American Artists such as Maria Lourdes and Nil Lara who continue to entertain the people. The city of Miami Florida also had artists such as Miami Sound Machine, Gloria Estefan, Lili Estefan, Maria Laria, Lourdes Ruiz Toledo, Hansel and Raul, Rolando Barral, Paquito D Rivera, Rolando Lasserie, Willy Chirino, Carlos Oliva, and Albita who have given so much to the culture of their city. Another example has been the poet Pedro Pablo Perez Santiesteban.

The City of Miami Florida has also been witness to other artists from Cuba such as Marilyn Romero, Ana Carballosa, Iliana Gonzalez, Alvarez Guedes, Blanca Rosa Gil, Emiliano Diez, Steve Bauer, Ana Margo, Susy Leman, Yamilet Machin, Iliana Garcia, Tito Hernandez, Severino Puente, and Armando Roblan.

More Cuban artists such Alberto Gonzalez, Maribel Gonzalez, Ernesto Morejon, Alina Internian, Natacha Amador, Tres Patines, Gustavo Laborie, Larry Villanueva, and Jorge Ovies who have delighted people in theater. Marta Perez, Olga Guillot, and Adita Linares have been other Cubans who have contributed to the enrichment of Miami Culture with Classical Cuban Zarzuelas and Music.

Who cannot forget stores and restaurants such as Farmacia Cardenas, Sentir Cubano, Lily’s Records, Versailles, Casa Yglesias, La Tacita, Maxiloly, Casa Panza, and El Pub? Who cannot forget the Health Care Profession such as J.Enrique Sueiro, Hugo Rosen, Pedro Meclhor, Florentino Dominguez, Dr. Milanes, Marilyn Reyes-Yera, Vivian Cuevas, Magdalena Limia, Ana Duyos, Cibeles Vidaud, Marilyn San Juan Horvath, Ramon Boza, Camille Gonzalez, Andres Vasquez, Susana Prieto, Jacqueline Junco, Frederick Nin, Federico Nin, Saida Gamez, Marino Lopez-Blanco, and Patricia Rosa? What about a Librarian whose name is Monica Bamio-Aparicio?

Who cannot forget the Administrative People who have contributed to Miami Florida such as Luis Gonzalez and Roberto Pique or the architects and designers such as Gerardo Gonzalez? What about the journalists such as Myrka de Llanos, Ricardo Brown, Nara Roza, Arnaldo Roza, Yossie Galindo, Alejandra Molina, Feliz Guillermo, Carines Moncada, Lisette Mari, Eliot Rodriguez, Maria Elvira Salazar, and Ana Azcuy? All of them live in Miami Florida, contributed to its history, and are Cuban either by birth, blood, and/or soul.

Many of them helped in the construction of a new Miami before the arrival of other countries from Latin America and their work has been marginalized by others such as the minority of the same Latin Americans or other ethnic groups.

What would be of Miami Florida today if all of the Cubans left? It would be the same thing if everyone were to do the same thing.
