The City of Miami Florida is another place in the world where efforts are underway to help the nation of Haiti recover from the earthquake that left it devastated. The hospitalis and other places have begun collection efforts to help while the celebrities in the fun capital of the world have contributed with their time.

The Magic City Casino will be hosting a concert in order to raise funds for the victims of the Haitian Earthquake. The concert will feature the following artists such as Cuban American Singer, Model, and Actress Maria Lourdes, Cuban Rap Star Rey El Vikingo, Cuban Salsa Stars Hansel and Raul.

The Magic City Casino Event will be taking place on the 24th of January 2010. The Dominican Republic is another country where there have been celebrity efforts to support the earthquake victims of Haiti.

The baseball team of Leones donated one day of their salary to help the victims of the Haitian Earthquake while Dominican Television stations staged a marathon. The marathon was hosted by Dominican Singer Charityn while the people watched the parade of stars giving their donations.

The Latin Stars that also participated in a seperate effort for the cause of the Haitian people was Juanes, Rudy Perez of Calle 13, and Fanny Lu. While the United States of America deserves praise for their efforts in helping the people of Haiti, the US Latin Community and the Latin countries in general deserve praise. The praise should also include the celebrities of the US Latin Community and Latin America.

The City of Miami Florida and La Habana Cuba were witness to a historical occasion with the television and radio on both sides of the Florida Straits broadcasting the Concert For Peace in Cuba given by Juanes.

In Miami, not everyone was happy and expressed it in a demonstration near the Versailles Restaurant. The people held placards that stated that Juanes was an “International Guerilla Fighter without Borders”. Other placards condemned Olga Ta~non and other singers who participated in the concert.

The demonstrators even had a steamroller to destroy the CDs of the artists who were involved in the concert. They also faced counter demonstrators who had placards saying “Yes Juanes No Fidel” which were ripped from them. The demonstrators who were Anti Juanes had permission from the City of Miami while the Pro Juanes Camp did not.

The Anti Juanes asked the police not to move them while the Pro Juanes were crossing into their side. The photos taken by the underwriter can reflect the tensions of the moment. Afterwards, the underwriter decided to watch the concert on television and offer a critique.

Olga Ta~non the international merengue star started the concert with some of her greatest hits. The people were dancing and overjoyed with the music and the singer especially when she challenged the public to think about love and charity. She also warned people not to push others [since this was happening in the concert], drink a lot of water [excessive heat], and she threw her hat to the public. Olga Ta~non deserves a 5/5 for her performance.

X Alfonso is one of the Cuban Stars who managed to capture the attention and hearts of those in the concert. His movements in the concert were a mixture of rock, funk, jazz, and rap all rolled into one. His best song “Revolution” mixed with some songs interpreted by Michael Jackson made for great dancing and singing. His performance earned him a 5/5.

Danny Rivera made an attempt to interpret classic boleros but his voice was incompatible with the loudspeakers. He was able to defend himself with “Yo Quiero Un Pueblo” [I Want A People] and gain a 4/5.

Juan Fernando Velasco who is an Ecuatorian Singer Songwriter and a favorite of Ecuadorian President Rafael Correa was not expressive in his singing. He earned a 1/5 with other singers such as Amaury Perez, Miguel Bose, Luis Eduardo Aute, and Victor Manuel since their singing left much to be desired. Maybe it is because the underwriter prefers a more percussive sound.

Silvio Rodriguez was anothe participant although I am willing to give him high marks for instrumentation. Again, the preference is more percussion so he receives a 3/5. Carlos Varela deserves special mention with his interpretation of music with a relativistic nature with a 3.5/5.

Juanes was another one of the artists [along with Olga Ta~non and X Alfonso] who stole the show even though he was the intellectual author. His rendition of “Camisa Negra” [Black Shirt] and his words of “Cuba Libre” [Free Cuba] was an exiting moment and the public was more than thirlled. He also challenged people to be more loving and caring of each other. He deserves a 5/5.

Orisha and Los Van Van closed the concert with what is true percussion. The underwriter felt the blood rushing through his veins as he felt the rhythm of the music. Los Van Van and their rendition of “Muevete” [Move It] was one of the greatest songs in the concerts. Everyone was moving including Olga Ta~non and Juanes. Los Van Van closed the concert with “Chan Chan” a composition by Compay Segundo with everyone singing and Olga Ta~non visibly moved.

Orisha and Los Van Van deserve a 5/5 and the concert deserves the same classification. This is going to be one of the unforgettable concerts of the 21st Century.

PAX

It appears that both sides of the Florida Straits are preparing for the Juanes Concert for Peace In Cuba with the artists and tourists arriving. The people in Cuba have been preparing for this for a long time with stands being placed in La Habana Cuba.

Juanes has been interviewed by Oscar Haza who is the host of the America Teve 41 Round Table Discussion Show called ‘A Mano Limpia” [Clean Hands]. Juanes declared that he has a surprise song that he wrote for the occasion.

Olga Ta~non declared in an interview with the US Latin TV Station Univision that it was her dream to perform in Cuba, Her inspiration was Father Dario who did missions in Cuba and helped people in the process. She is also supporting Juanes in his concert for peace saying that there should be music instead of politics.

Univision as well as other US Latin Stations announced that they will transmit the live concert from Cuba via television and live stream from the internet. This announcement is for those who are interested in seeing and hearing the concert.

The announcement as well as the decision of Cuban Radio and Television [Cubavision, Radio Habana Cuba, Radio Rebelde] and Telesur [Venezuelan TV] to transmit this concert is a historic occasion.

This is the first time that the above mentioned radio and TV Stations will transmit to a large segment of the American Continent including the US Latin Community. Regardless, there have been detractors such as the program “Derechos Reservados” hosted by Fernando Castells and Graciela Mori on GEMS TV.

They based their reason on the lack of freedom, democracy, and peace in Cuba.

The underwriter believes that Juanes and the other participants of the Concert For Peace have a right to participate in a concert in Cuba, North Korea, Iran, or any place they like to perform. While the concert may not resolve the political situation in Cuba and the rest of the American Continent, it may be a relief albeit a temporary one.

After all, it is the politicians and governments who have caused the mess that exists in Cuba and the rest of the American Continent with their Cold War Rhetoric, Hatred, Bigotry, Divisions, and Warmongering. Maybe it is time to heed the words of John Lennon and “Give Peace A Chance”.

The underwriter is saying this taking into account that Cuba remains a Communist Dictatorship run by Castro. He understands that once a group called Los Pacificos [The Peace Makers] were once arrested for doing a rock concert in Cuba during the 1960′s when the genre was banned and people were put in prison for listening to it.

The people who want to protest can do so in a peaceful manner by boycotting the recordings and concerts of those who participated in the Concert For Peace. After all, it will not make the concert go away since there is another one planned for the border between the USA and Mexico.

The people who have a right to protest are those who left Cuba and never returned to visit, including family, and have not dealt with the Government of Cuba since starting their lives as exile. The people who protest but have visited Cuba or dealt with the government since beginning their lives as exiles have to look at their conscience and think what they are doing.

The opinions of the underwriter have been based on the personal experience of having to endure family division [the writer and half of his family in the USA and the other half in Cuba] because of the myopic arbitrary decisions of the Governing Elite in Cuba and the United States of America.
