England as well as the United States of America is one of the few countries bidding to become hosts of the 2018 or 2022 World Cup. While England deserves to host the World Cup after more than four decades, it made one of the mistakes that may cost it dearly.

During the month of October 2009, the English Committee that was bidding for the 2018 or 2022 World Cup spot gave the wives of the voting committee handbags. While it appears to be a harmless gesture on the part of the committee, it should be construed as nothing more than bribery. The underwriter states this even though the gifts have been considered “symbolic”.

Imagine the uproar that would have occurred in the media if the US Committee bidding for the 2018 or 2022 World Cup were to give out handbags, food, or souvenirs of the distinct cities in America.  This occurred during the Olympics when the USA was bidding to host the events and America learned its lesson.

While FIFA has made public its rules about “gifts of a symbolic nature”, it has to learn to clarify or make rules on what constitutes acceptable behavior among bidding nations for the World Cup in order to avoid these problems. FIFA also has to define what is meant by symbolic.

FIFA is planning to hold a special meeting of its Ethics Committee to decide what should be done. Jack Warner who is a Senior Meeting of the FIFA Executive Committee did the right thing in returning the handbag and the rest of the members of the voting committee for World Cup bids should do the same thing.

FIFA should also punish England by removing from bidding for a World Cup until after 2026. It is the only way that a lesson on how to bid for a World Cup will be learned. The BBC should receive praise for reporting this story out in the open.

The people who read this article may say that the underwriter is just simply “promoting the USA bid”. The case is not of favoring one nation over another one. It is a case of bribery and it should be exposed with proper punishment regardless of its origins.

BBC World Service Memories

1970:

On a cold Christmas Day in Ohio USA in 1970, I received a Christmas Gift. The gift was a shortwave radio manufactured by the electronics giant Panasonic. My pet dog was next to me as I opened the package and saw the radio. I decided to look at the instructions manual and turn on the radio. The first station that appeared on the air was the BBC World Service and it was broadcasting a Christmas programme. I loved every minute of the BBC Programme. Of course, I was an eight year old boy but many people including little boys knew about radio and those who were into shortwave were able to appreciate the BBC. Since then, I have listened to the BBC within its many spheres.

Around the same time that I was listening to the BBC World Service for the first time in Christmas 1970, PBS which is the Public Television Station in the USA started airing episodes of two comedy programmes from Great Britain. The two programmes were The Goodies and Monty Python’s Flying Circus.

Afterwards, the comedy in the USA especially in a tightly controlled state such as Ohio was never the same. I could still remember laughing at the antics of the Goodies especially Bill Oddie. The comedy actually started pushing the envelope of local TV.

Monty Python’s Flying Circus was even funnier and mad me laugh. The authorities in Ohio attempted to ban Monty Python’s Flying Circus but the free speech issue prevented it. Anyway, people would use their tape recorder and record the episode for their private use.

People would also gather for underground Monty Python Parties in which the sketches and comedy was discussed. The presence of “The Goodies” and “Monty Python’s Flying Circus” occurred at the age of eight going on nine.

1979:

Iranian Students take members of the US Embassy Hostage in 1979. I was in Valencia, Edo. Carabobo Venezuela listening to the BBC and the unfolding drama that was forming at that time. There were people around me listening to the BBC and having moments of anger. This was in the school.

During Christmas Vacation 1979 in Caracas, Venezuela; I was with some friends from the Colegio Internacional Caracas. One night around late December, one of my friends who was an Austrian National turned on her shortwave radio. It was the BBC announcing that the USSR had invaded Afghanistan and replaced Hafizullah Amin with Babrak Karmal. Since my hobby was DXing, I found a paper and pen and started writing a reception report. Afterwards, we heard the same news on Radio Tashkent [USSR Now Uzbekistan]. I wrote another reception report for Radio Tashkent. The next day, the reports were mailed but I could not stop thinking about the carnage that followed the invasion.

1983:

I was listening to the events of Grenada in 1983 on the BBC. What transpired was that I was studying Medicine. At the same time that Grenada was unravelling, there were talks of and there was an attempted coup in the Dominican Republic. I was with my friends and everyone had their shortwave radios tuned to the BBC. I was in a room with my girlfriend at that time with both of us listening to the BBC. In addition to the shortwave radios, some of our friends in the house [about 20 people in one house] were ready to board five miniature trucks to go to the sea and navigate the Mona Passage to Puerto Rico. The only thing we had to do was leave everything we had except our documents proving that we were US Citizens. We were all US Citizens studying in the Dominican Republic in Dentistry, and Medicine. This was not necessary since the attempted coup [or rumours of it] dissolved with the US invading Grenada.

1994:

I was listening to the Bundesliga on Deutsche Welle when the signal left. I heard screaming and people shouting. I switched to the BBC and found out that the President of Rwanda and Burundi had been killed in a plane crash which leads to a killing spree. My deduction was that Deutsche Welle was transmitting from their antennae in Kigali Rwanda which explains the screams. For the next two months, I was able to hear the BBC on my shortwave the events that became one of the worst acts of genocide in the 20th Century [next to Cambodia under the Khmer Rouge]. I was left numb on how humans can be cruel to one another.

After the genocide reports stopped, I went ahead and listened to the First World Cup in the USA in 1994. I was saddened by the death of the Colombian Player who scored an own goal for the USA. England also proved itself in the World Cup. It was nice hearing the World Cup since I am an avid football fan. For me, it did not matter who won the World Cup. It was better to hear football as a way to recover from the Rwanda Genocide.

1997:

Around 1997, the BBC World Service was no longer on shortwave radio even though I still listen to it. The BBC in Spanish announced that they will no longer broadcast via shortwave. I was afraid that I would no longer listen to the BBC. On Father’s Day 1997, my wife gave me the Internet service. One of the first stations that I managed to visit was BBC Scotland. I also listened to its station. This was the first time that I managed to listen to the BBC including BBC Scotland on the internet. It was a great feeling even though I think shortwave service complimented the internet. The programme I heard was a sports programme followed by a traditional Celtic one. It was my first exposure to BBC Scotland and local BBC Programmes since my visit to London in 1987.

2005:

Hurricane Katrina swept through the Miami Area leaving Anarchy, Downed Power Lines, and lack of amenable goods. I was able to hear the BBC on my Shortwave Radio since Computers were not functioning. After a few minutes, I slept. My wife Marlene woke me up to tell me that my Aunt died because of lack of amenities [she was on an artificial respirator]. She also told me that the BBC in Manchester wanted to talk with me. Michelle Daniels and BBC Manchester were the first human beings outside of my house to call me. It was something that I will never forget especially with the anarchy surrounding Miami Florida.

Within the months, there were lines for Internet Cafes and I was able to appreciate listening [at least for ten minutes] BBC Asian Network and Sonia Deol. Her voice had a calming effect on this BBC Listener especially when there was no petrol, no food, no traffic lights, and no semblance of government

Hurricane Rita and Hurricane Wilma struck Florida again with the same results. BBC Radio Leeds and BBC Radio Sheffield called this loyal listener and it was great to hear from them especially Alex Hall. BBC Radio Cornwall called and people like Alex Full, Naomi Rowe, and other announcers also provided tranquillity in the storm. My thanks to the BBC especially BBC Manchester [Michelle Daniels, Jack Dearden], BBC Radio Cornwall [Alex Full, Naomi Rowe], BBC Radio Leeds [Alex Hall], and BBC Asian Network [Sonia Deol, Anita Rani, and Rozina Sini] for your support and solidarity in these trying times.

2008:

At the end of US Election Day 2008, many people decided to watch the results on their TV Sets. I decided to listen to the BBC on the internet since they had superior coverage compared to some of the media in America.

I remember turning on the computer, going to the internet, and turning on the Windows Media Player and Real Player for the live coverage. I could remember seeing the states either lighting up blue or red in the BBC before it did with the major US Networks.

While there was a lot of joy and happiness with the victory as well as celebrations in the streets, the BBC started showing people in Chicago Illinois celebrating the victory of Obama.

It was great to be with the BBC as the USA turned away at least for the time away from race and ethnicity to elect the first African American President. Whether he succeeds or not, the BBC was the first station to have addressed this moment of history.

North Korea Accuses South Korea of Food Poisoning

Archivado en: BBC, Deportes, Futbol, KBS — alvarezgalloso @ 5:07 pm
Tags: , , ,

I am writing this article as a believer that sports and politics must remain separated. It appears that the deteriorating relations between the two Koreas have affected football [soccer] matches. On the 1st of April 2009, North Korea lost one of the most important games to South Korea for the 2010 FIFA World Cup Classification.

North Korea’s Football [Soccer] Association launched a complaint against South Korea accusing it of poisoning its players. The South Korean Football [Soccer] Association called the Korea Football Association [KFA] has denied the claims. Their response was that their physician evaluated the North Korean Players and found no evidence of food poisoning.

North Korea has asked to have the games between the two Koreas played in neutral areas. FIFA has said no to the North Korean request. The only exception was when a game had to be played in a neutral area. The reason was that North Korea prohibits the national anthem and flag of South Korea in its territory.

Every country has its rules and regulations but sports should be separated from politics in the same way that the state and church. While many talk about sports with politics, sports is a way of escaping the daily routines of life.

Many people who watch a football [soccer] game or enjoy baseball as well as other sports just want to have fun. It is nothing more and nothing less. The people and the nations should leave their personal problems at the doorstep when concentrating in sports. I have said this many times in life and will continue to say this.

Mc Cartney, Roig, and Part: 20th Century Classical Music Genius

While Classical Music has been associated with Bach and Handel, the 20th Century has had its share of Classical Music Genius such as Former Beatles Paul Mc Cartney, Cuban Composer Gonzalo Roig, and Estonian Composer Arvo Part.

Classical Music is alive and kicking with composers such as the former Beatles Singer and Songwriter Paul Mc Cartney having written his “Liverpool Oratorio” almost two decades ago. Paul Mc Cartney also wrote another Classical Music piece called “Standing Stone” in 1997 followed by “Working Classical” in 1999, and “Ecce Cor Meum” in the year 2006. The four albums have been garnered popularity in the Classical Music Charts as well as Popular Music.

There have been other releases of Classical Music especially after some of Bachs Cantatas have been found in Japan such as “The Wedding Cantata BMW 216″ and others which were found in eastern Germany. It is these releases that have people buying classical music if only to hear music that was never released to the public. For those who think that Classical Music has no place in the 20th and 21st Century have not heard of the works of Gonzalo Roig and Arvo Part.

Recently, there has been an interest in the music of Cuban Composer Gonzalo Roig [1890-1970] and his classical zarzuela called “Cecilia Valdes” which played to rave reviews in Miami Florida as well as Toronto, Ontario, Canada. I once saw the performance of “Cecilia Valdes” in Miami Florida and the majority of the public were a younger generation of those who either left Cuba when they were babies or born in the United States to Cuban Parents.

During the performance of “Cecilia Valdes”, there were other nationalities in the theatre as well as those who were performing. The public and the performers were from the generation that lived through the era of the Beatles, the Disco Era, and other eras. A recent performance showed another public and performers who lived in the era of Hip Hop, Britney Spears, and Selena Gomez yet they were enjoying the Zarzuela written in 1932 and relaxing.

Arvo Part [1935-Present] is another example of why Classical Music is alive, kicking, and popular.

Arvo Part’s music increased in popularity after the Independence of Estonia from the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics [now Russia] in 1990. Arvo Part was famous for writing works such as the “Berliner Messe”, “Tabula Rasa”, “Te Deum”, and “Summa for Chorus” have been popular among the youth and young adults for being an alternative to the artificial music that exists today as well as for relaxation.

What is admirable about Arvo Part was that his early compositions of the 1950’s and 1960’s were written at a time when foreign influence in Estonia was minimal with the exception of the usual Russian influence. For those who underestimate Arvo Part and think that classical music is dead should read the quotes of the New York Composer Steve Reich [1936-Present].

The words of Steve Reich about Arvo Part were the following: “Even in Estonia, Arvo was getting the same feeling that we were all getting.I love his music and I love the fact that he is a brave and talented man. He is completely out of step with the zeitgeist [the fashion statements of the present time and yet he is enormously popular, which is so inspiring. His music fulfills a deep human need that has nothing to do with fashion.”

While Paul Mc Cartney deserves credit for maintaining Classical Music, people like Gonzalo Roig and Arvo Part deserve praise for being able to transcend the fashion of the day with their classical music. As long as there are people who listen to Mc Cartney, Roig, and Part, there is hope for Classical Music.

Recommended African Football Online Sites

African Soccer [Football] has become popular as the world enters a new era of globalization. What has been the favourite of the few who listen to shortwave radio has converted into something that is popular. One of the best places where African Soccer [football] can be found are in some of the web pages of Africa itself.

Radio Cairo or Egyptian Radio and Television have the best coverage when it comes to African Football. They have been great when it comes to the coverage of the African Cup of Nations and the World Cup. Egyptian Radio and Television have the inside story about African Football [Soccer] Players from the viewpoint of Africa.

Radio Cairo as well as Egyptian Radio and Television has been at the forefront of African Football [Soccer] News On line as well as on Radio and Television taking into account an experience of almost five decades. I could still remember some of the coverage of the 1978 African Cup of Nations in Radio Cairo when I listened to it on shortwave radio.

Another station that has given coverage to African Football [Soccer] News has been Angolan Radio and Television otherwise known as Radio Nacional do Angola and Radio Television do Angola. Angola gave coverage to one of the African Cup of Nations World Cups and was one of the first stations in the 1990s to reveal the death of one of the players of the Mozambican National Football [Soccer] Team from a heat stroke long before the Western Media reported the story.

The Zimbabwe Daily and one of its writers Isabel Panangara was one of the first reporters and medium to reveal the extent of the Sex Scandal in Zimbabwe Football [Soccer] when other sports on line services ignored the news. Ms. Panangara revealed how the Chief Executive of Zimbabwe Football [Soccer] Henrietta Rushwaya was having sex with some of the football [soccer] players during practice.

The Zimbabwe Daily also revealed how the Sex Scandal ended any or all hope of Zimbabwe classifying in the African Cup of Nations or in the World Cup.

One of the best Non African Websites for African Football [Soccer] has been the BBC. The BBC has various online sites dedicated to African Football [Soccer]. At one point, the BBC was able to interview one of the coaches of the Sierra Leone National Football [Soccer] during an attempted military coup in the Ivory Coast. One of the best programmes have been “Fast Track” hosted by Farayi Mungazi.

“Fast Track” gives an indepth coverage of African Football [Soccer] and was one of the stations that was reporting publicly on Didier Drogba. There are many venues but the best are Egyptian Radio and Television, the Zimbabwe Daily, Radio Nacional do Angola, and the BBC.

The Future for Drogba and Mourinho?

Archivado en: BBC, Chelsea, Futbol, Press TV — alvarezgalloso @ 1:16 am

As Drogba heads towards the Ivory Coast to participate in the Africa’s Cup of Nation, many of the pundits are wandering about his future with Chelsea in wake of reports by Press TV.

The pundits are also wandering about the future of The Great One after he refused to become The National Coach of England.

Press TV and the Sports Magazine As reported again about Drogba leaving Chelsea for AC Milan as soon as his contract expires while Mourinho has been picked to succeed Ancellotti as Coach of the team. BBC Sports made similar reports. The Daily Sports have also added fuel to the speculations by reporting on Drogba and The Great One going to Milan.

Drogba has been rumored to want to leave Chelsea but these were squashed after a conversation with Grant. Drogba retracted his earlier statements and said that he wanted to play for Chelsea. Drogba had also stated that he did want to discuss his future with Chelsea until he “meets privately at the end of the [2007-2008] season”.

As is also reporting that FC Barcelona is interested in replacing Rijkaard with Mourinho but he prefers Milan to Barcelona. This report has also been repeated by Press TV.

While originally stating that Drogba and Mourino would be ideal for AC Milan, I decided to review all of the reports extensively. I now conclude that either the reports are true with the people and clubs involved withholding comments or that the clubs and players involved are just experimenting with this type of news in order to see the reaction of the press.

I will not believe unless there is proof. These stories appear to be too good to be true.
