I had lost faith in American Pop Culture until Weird Al Yankovic released “Alpocalypse” to the world. The history of American culture has not been the same since the release of this icon.
The first song from “Alpocalypse” that I heard was the spoof by Yankovic of one of Lady Gaga’s songs. The song “Perform This Way” which is a spoof of “Born This Way” left me laughing to the point of falling on the floor.
I decided to see a video version of “Perform That Way” which shows Yankovic doing the same theatrics that Lady Gaga does but better and funnier. In the beginning of the video, Yankovic hatched out of an egg, walked with his face between his legs, and almost resembled Lady Gaga in his performance in the use of costumes
The song “Perform That Way” also changed my perception of Lady Gaga from a cold artist to a person who has a sense of humor. I could see “Perform That Way” and enjoy the essence of the comic flair of Yankovic and the artistic flair of Lady Gaga.
The song “Polka Face” is a medley/parody of songs recorded by Lady Gaga, Lady Antebellum, Lil Wayne, Katy Perry, Justin Bieber, Pink, Ludacris, and other artists. The medley/parody is another example of how Weird AL Yankovic has been able to convert some of the mediocre music of today into a work of comic art.
The song “TMZ” is another spoof of the song “You Belong With Me” recorded by Taylor Swift. The song takes a comic turn with an excellent video made by Bill Plympton.
The “TMZ” video shows a woman celebrity wanting to attract attention but the result was a disaster for her and comic for others. The video shows TMZ (by accident) taking a photo of the woman celebrity’s rear end and posting it on the internet.
My interpretation of TMZ is that the American Pop Culture of today has become mundane and artificial to the point that everything is news. The reason for everything becoming news is the advent of social networking sites as well as the internet.
I also recommend the spoof “Party In the CIA” which is a spoof of the song ”Party In The USA” made popular by Miley Cyrus. The last song that deserves recognition is the song “Stop Forwarding That Crap To Me” which is dedicated to junk mail and spam.
Weird Al Yankovic has demonstrated with “Alpocalypse” that he will be remembered as the greatest comedian that the USA has given to the world in the late 20th and early 21st Century.
